This historic 1,600-square-foot row house in Washington, D.C.’s vibrant Atlas District was built in 1911. The whole house renovation stemmed from the homeowner’s desire for a walk-in closet. Unlike other design-build firms that pushed for vertical expansion, we achieved the client’s goals through intelligent space planning and creative reconfiguration of the existing second floor.
The new primary suite is a standout feature of this DC row house renovation, featuring not only a large walk-in closet but an upgraded primary bath. What used to be a small three-piece bath with a 30” vanity and little storage now features a private water closet, double vanity, full-height linen storage, and a generous walk-in shower. The tiling behind the floating vanity was custom-designed by Elizabeth, featuring oversized tiles of Nero Marquina cut into strips of varying widths, alternating with brass accents to create an Art Deco-inspired wallpaper effect.
The hall bath was remodeled with a custom barrier-free walk-in shower with Calacatta Chablis marble floors and shower walls. The two back bedrooms have increased closet storage, and the laundry was relocated off the hall.
The powder room and storage closet on the main level were reconfigured to increase space and functionality. The new closet was clad with custom door panels using concealed hinges and magnetic catches, giving the effect of a wainscot accent wall. All of the floors were infilled and refinished, and the original fireplace and main staircase were lovingly restored.
In the basement apartment, the kitchenette was revamped with a frosted glass backsplash, butcher block countertops, and a vibrant Big Chill fridge. A new entertainment unit was designed for the TV area. The bathroom was renovated to include a barrier-free walk-in shower with a custom-designed floor-to-ceiling shower niche.
