This Georgie Award nominated home sits perched high on a cliff overlooking the Pacific on Bowen Island. The 1,000 sq. ft. house is a seamless blend of architecture and nature. Built by Alair Homes Squamish and designed by GNAR Inc., it captures the essence of West Coast living, bold, sustainable, and deeply rooted in its surroundings.
The home is tucked into the landscape, taking its design cues from Indigenous architecture. Pit Houses were dug one meter down, protected from the frost level, and the roof was insulated with earth. Over time, the earth on the roof would sprout and the home would appear to be a part of the landscape.
This beautiful custom home boasts a living roof, green in spring and a golden hue in summer. The home is nestled amongst Dutch-inspired gardens, integral to the home’s aesthetic. The vegetation was specifically chosen to blend into the local landscape and to withstand the sometimes pesky island residents – deer!
But perhaps the biggest shows-stopper here is the deck, with a footprint that’s larger than the home itself. It’s designed to make the most of the impressive views and maximize warm weather outdoor living.
Inside we find a great room and kitchen, and two wings, each with a bedroom and bathroom. Wide-plank oak floors, custom finishes, eye-catching tiling and sweeping ocean views create a calm, contemporary retreat.
The home was also built with green energy in mind. It’s supported by solar power, a Stûv fireplace, and a custom water treatment system.
More than just a residence, this home is an experience, where landscape, sustainability, and design come together in perfect harmony.
Deck and structure made of thermally modified Hemlock and Ash. Thermawood has been treated to make it more stable, durable and rot resistant. It is also environmentally-friendly as it doesn’t require staining.

Angular ceilings and custom wide plank flooring makes for a bright and airy space.
Wall to ceiling windows make the most of majestic views. Stüv fireplace serves as secondary source of heat during colder months.
Primary bath features geometric blue and white floor and shower tiles. The tiles extend beyond the glass and the bathroom floor, adding visual interest.
The guest bath features grey, yellow and white honeycomb tiles. A creative way to bring visual interest to the space.
Primary bedrooms features asymmetrical ceiling and two large windows, designed to take in the views at any angle.
The green roof allows the home melt into the landscape.
