At Alair South Tampa, we believe exceptional homes are the result of strong partnerships. From the earliest conversations through the final details, collaboration between builders, designers, and homeowners creates spaces that are both beautiful and deeply personal.

We recently sat down with Audra Samnotra, founder of Social Swan Decor, to discuss her approach to design, the importance of early collaboration, and what homeowners should know before beginning a custom home or renovation project.

Design That Starts With People

Q: Can you share the story behind Social Swan Decor, how it got started and where it is today?

Social Swan Decor is a residential interior design studio in Tampa, Florida. Most of our work is in custom homes, large-scale renovations, and complete home furnishings throughout West Central Florida. Our approach to design centers on thoughtful curation, architectural sensitivity, and a belief that the most enduring interiors uniquely reflect the people who live in them.

My background as a former Wall Street hedge fund executive and Chief of Staff gives me a unique approach to project management, communication, and client service, which have become hallmarks of my business.

While I started in the world of finance and still enjoy critical problem solving, I wanted to pursue a different path that nurtured the values that mattered most to me: family, warmth, adventure, and tradition. Design is a process that gives you a beautiful home, but the most enchanting transformation is the way life evolves inside it.

Beginning the Journey Early

Q: When should homeowners hire an interior designer during a custom home or renovation project?

We should be one of your early phone calls alongside Alair. Most clients have imagined their homes long before construction begins. A custom home is a rare opportunity to build something completely unique to who you are and what you love. An interior designer becomes the bridge between the technical aspects of construction and your personal vision.

Q: Why is early collaboration between a builder and interior designer so important?

The architectural features that make a home feel comfortable, functional, and special are introduced in the earliest phases of a project. These details bring sophistication and depth that cannot easily be added later.

Working alongside Alair during the discovery phase allows us to understand what matters most to the homeowner and create those layers early while avoiding design gaps that clients may otherwise live with for years.

Designing for Florida Living

Q: What common mistakes do Florida homeowners make when they don’t involve a designer early?

Florida presents unique environmental challenges. Material selections can help mitigate issues such as heat, humidity, salt exposure, and severe weather.

This can include selecting impact-rated doors, incorporating shading solutions, choosing durable finishes, and specifying materials that perform well in Florida’s climate. Another common oversight is failing to consider sightlines, particularly in waterfront homes where views become one of the home’s greatest assets.

Q: What design decisions have the biggest long-term impact on how Florida homes live and feel?

Longevity depends on how a home adapts to both the environment and the homeowner’s lifestyle. Selecting materials that resist humidity, water, and heat helps ensure the home performs beautifully over time.

Equally important is creating strong indoor-outdoor connections that make Florida homes feel expansive, cohesive, and timeless.

The Power of Partnership

Q: How does a strong designer-builder relationship improve the final result?

Beautiful homes require an even better process. Alair has a strong client-focused approach that I truly appreciate. Together, we know how to document, communicate, and collaborate, creating ease, efficiency, and solutions throughout the project.

Often, challenges can be resolved between the builder and designer before they ever reach the homeowner, allowing the project to continue moving forward while maintaining a positive experience.

Q: What advice would you give homeowners before starting a custom build or renovation?

Start with the right team. Prioritize early conversations between your builder, designer, and architect. The right team helps uncover what matters most to you, align your vision with your investment, and guide you confidently through the process.
