Everyone dreads moving and very recently we had the opportunity to move across town. Now, I say opportunity because rather than looking at all of the horrible, tiresome, late night, crazy reasons why moving is the most dreaded task, I am going to look at all of the positive aspects of moving, because, believe it or not, there are some.
Living someplace new can open your mind to the world, elicit new confidence, humor and a sense of adventure, and make you feel freer and more alive. Below are some other great positives that you can take away from your moving experience.
You can reinvent yourself. If you have lived in the same place forever, this gives you an opportunity to be a different person than you were when you were 10, which is the age when all of your friends around started getting to know you. Now you can change and be the sophisticated, mature, person you always wanted to be.
You can make wonderful new friends.
You can keep your brain fresh. In a new place your brain is called upon to learn and be more resourceful. Experience a new culture, expand your mind.
Try new things, rather than doing the same old thing which tends to happen when you live in the same place.
Experience different aspects of yourself. When you are in a new area, it opens doors to different sides of you, such as your playful side, if you live near a park, or your cultural side, if you are closer to a museum.
Finding a better fit. You will never know until you move. Maybe the area where you have always lived seemed to be great but moving opens up a whole new opportunity to find a better fit.
Moving makes you become more adaptable, flexible and tolerant. This lowers the stress for you and the people around you. This also helps children deal with change better, later in life.
This is also a great time to simplify your life. With each move, you are able to clean out, get rid of the clutter, and this allows you to keep the things that you love and get rid of the rest.
Also keep in mind that you can always leave, you have nothing to lose by moving. You just don’t ever want to ask yourself, “what if?”
“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” — Mark Twain
