New Braunfels is a city unlike any other – it’s located in the Texas Hill Country and was founded by German settlers in the 1840’s. The unique mixture of its old-world charm and its small-town Texas vibe sets it apart from surrounding cities. There are so many things to do and see for people of all ages and abilities.

In the same day, you can enjoy a walk through the quaint historic district, go fossil mining in the Natural Bridge Caverns, and finish off the evening by floating down one of the rivers nearby. Here are the top five events and activities in the area for summer 2018.

1. Natural Bridge Caverns

This awe-inspiring attraction is perfect for adventurous types and more relaxed personalities alike. You can enjoy a guided, walking tour of the natural stone caverns within this underground cave. In addition, you can find more hands-on activities here, like fossil and gem mining, zip-lining, and an obstacle course.

2. River Tubing on the Comal or Guadalupe River

Tubing on the Comal River is one of the most popular activities in the area. This scenic river flows through nearby Landa Park, through downtown, and finally merges with the Guadalupe. Guadalupe River floating features a longer ride with more exciting rapids and speed, while floating the Comal River is a more relaxing experience. Tubes and life vests can be rented from several outlets nearby – just bring a bathing suit and you’re ready to get going. Both rivers are consistently a pleasant 68-72 degrees, cool enough to be refreshing on hot summer days but not cold enough to be uncomfortable.

3. Gruene Historic District

This well-preserved town features original buildings with rich history. Wander through the streets and you’ll find an assortment of antique malls, coffee shops, and old-fashioned soda fountain, restaurants, clothing stores, and Gruene Hall, the oldest dance hall in Texas. The venue often features live music and has played host to many famous names including Willie Nelson and George Strait. Visitors of all ages will have fun relaxing, shopping, eating in, and exploring the area.

4. The Peddler’s Show

This one-of-a-kind shopping experience is different every year and features a number of local artisans, crafters, and jewelers. You’ll find gourmet treats, handmade kids clothes and toys, rustic furniture, and all kinds of unique gifts. The summer 2018 Peddler’s Show will be held in the New Braunfels Civic and Convention Center from August 10-12th. There is a small charge for entry but kids under 12 are admitted for free.

5. Schlitterbahn

This ever-popular, family-friendly Texas waterpark can provide several days of action-packed fun for kids and adults of all ages. Some of their rides, like their lazy river are tamer, while many of their waterslides are perfect for thrill-seekers. The park features over 50 attractions spanning 70 acres and has been named the most popular summertime waterpark in the United States for 20 years. Schlitterbahn is open daily until August 26, 2018, at which time it will resume weekend hours only.
