Here’s a question that not all builders will ask you: Are you sure you want to build a custom home?

While we are sure this will take you aback, we feel strongly that you need to be certain you know what building a custom home entails. One aspect that many clients don’t consider is if you want to go through the effort and the process of making the decisions necessary to build a custom home. A little self-reflection before the process starts will help ensure expectations are met and that everyone enjoys the process along the way.

To help you answer this question, we’ve come up with this quick quiz:

Do you enjoy making decisions?

Consider a small task, like selecting a new set of sheets. Is this something you revel in thinking about? Or do you get stuck and overwhelmed trying to consider budget, color, thread count, product reviews?

Considering how you react to a smaller task is insightful for considering how a custom home design and build process will feel for you. After all, building a custom home is like selecting 2000 new sets of sheets for your entire home. Decision fatigue is common. Having the endurance for the process, fueled by your passion for your dream home outcome, is key to an enjoyable experience.

How skilled are you at envisioning what something will look like when it’s completed?

While we don’t expect any of our clients to be expert designers and visionaries, there is some level of comfort in this area that would be good to have to relieve the stress of the unknown. Being able to interpret 2D plans, judge what colors and finishes will look like before they are installed together, etc. are a plus, but not required….and that brings us to the next question…

How comfortable are you relying on pro expertise as opposed to researching and independently verify everything yourself?

There are many aspects of the custom home decision process that will go smoother, faster and have the best outcome, if a client can rely on the expertise and recommendations of a professional. These professionals could be designers, trade partners, architects and of course, your custom home builder. They can help overcome the aspects of questions 1 & 2 that may be stress points for you, but only if you are comfortable trusting them to guide you.

So here’s the good news. Alair Homes Houston is equipped to advise you through the process. We have a host of partners we can introduce you to, who will help make design decisions – from architects, interior designers to tile and hardware professionals. You should not feel like you are on a one-person mission to build your dream home. Our client’s experience is paramount to our mission.
