Making Room for an Award-Winning Decatur Classic Primary Suite
This award-winning project centered on finding a way to add a bathroom and closet to an existing primary bedroom, creating a true primary suite that turned out to be an airy cottage-style delight.

Challenged for Space:
We were constrained by the existing footprint of this charming craftsman-style home, which had been occupied by and lovingly maintained by the homeowners for more than forty years.
Early in the planning phase of this project, we recognized the opportunity for repurposing enclosed space for mechanical and laundry equipment, as well as borrowing space from an existing enclosed porch and transitional areas of the home.
Solutions for Days:
We tucked the new tankless water heater into a closet and moved the washer and dryer into a new compact mudroom. Doing this allowed plenty of space for a double vanity, generous shower and private commode chamber. We also added new windows and aging-in-place functionality to fill the space with natural light and make it appropriate for all users.
No space had to be stolen from the adjoining bedroom, so it was able to essentially remain as-is. The hall bath, which had been dark and cramped, benefited from a new layout and charming trim details to provide excellent function and design that complements the overall craftsman vibe of the home.
Details:
An extensive vanity with double sinks highlights one wall, finished in Sherwin-Williams Escape Gray, and is adorned with Anthropologie Alverta ceramic knobs in white, which truly act as jewelry in the space.
A quartz countertop in honed Calcutta Michelangelo coordinates with the Sobu Canvas White tile in the shower and Sobu Morning Blend Matte Hex Mosaic on the floor.
Brass fittings and accessories – Davis Double sconces in Natural Brass and Domed Turtle Shade Opal, and Regency Hill Soft Gold White Glass Schoolhouse ceiling light – complete the space.
